Perini Management Services, Inc. was the prime contractor for a US Fish and Wildlife Service project to restore 567 acres of salt marsh in Suffolk and Nassau Counties damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The restoration helped buffer Long Island communities from future storms and sea-level rise. In addition, the project restored natural functions in damaged and degraded coastal salt marshes on Long Island through an integrated approach that addressed tidal hydrology, surface water habitat, invasive species, living shoreline stabilization and sea level rise.

The project scope of work includes:

• Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge – channel excavation, installation of coir logs, and filling of existing grid ditches.
• Seatuck National Wildlife Refuge – grading of wet dredge, excavating new channels, reseeding travelways, and installing plantings.
• Lido Beach Wildlife Management Area – installation of three breakwater reaches, including sand backfill and planting of marsh grass (spartina alterniflora).
