Perini is serving as the prime contractor for a major renovation of the Chancery building at the U.S. Embassy in Montevideo, Uruguay. The Montevideo Chancery is 4-story, 7,710 gross square meters, concrete-framed building that was designed by renowned architect I. M. Pei and constructed in 1969. This building is listed on OBO's Culturally Significant Properties Inventory and the renovations will be performed in a manner that preserves the historic nature of the building.

The Chancery rehabilitation is a multi-phased project requiring close cooperation between Perini and Embassy staff to ensure that the Embassy’s day-to-day operations continue with minimal interruption. Temporary swing space was utilized to accommodate Embassy personnel and maintain a functional facility throughout each phase of construction. The scope of work includes: upgrading the building shell to meet blast requirements, replacing exterior windows, renovating and reconfiguring interior spaces throughout the building, adding a new fire escape stairway, replacing the electrical system with host country voltage, replacing the air conditioning system, removing asbestos materials (doors and floor and ceiling tiles), installing fire sprinklers and alarms, installing a Building Automation System (BAS), and upgrading elevators. It also includes construction of a free-standing pump house with generator room and demarcation rooms on the Embassy site.

The project required construction in Controlled Access Areas (CAA), Limited Access Areas (LAA), General Work Areas (GWA), and Public Access Areas (PAA). Our CAA scope involved work in both CAA Core Areas and CAA Restricted Areas. The project will also achieve a LEED certification of Silver.
